Do I need a day...

I got a call, early in the morning..
The voice at the other end
Declared excitedly
“Happy friendship day”….

“Oh”, I replied, ” same to you…”
And then I wondered
Do I need a day
Just to say
That you are my friend,
And that our friendship will never end ?

Why do I fail
To remember the date
When we met (for the first time)
Near the school gate?
And I know that even you are at a loss
To recollect the day
When we sat together, silent..
And had nothing to say…

Did you care to note down the month
When we shared the pink dreams,
And the week when our aspirations
Threatened to break at the seams..? 

Do we, you and me, need a day,
Just once a year
To tell each other
“You are so dear”……………?

Like my thoughts, like my dreams,
Like my tears, like my smile
You are with me, my friend,
Every moment, every time….
